Why WebP to AVIF isn't available yet
AVIF compresses very well, but browsers are much better at displaying it than creating it: the built-in canvas API can't write AVIF files, and a WebAssembly AVIF encoder adds several megabytes to every visit. Because AVIF output is rarely needed, we haven't added that cost to every page. Rather than give you a mislabeled file, the tool tells you it can't do it.

Not yet. Browsers can't write AVIF through the canvas API, and an AVIF encoder for the browser is several megabytes, so we haven't added one. The tool reports this instead of giving you a file in a different format with an .avif name.
