About JPEG to AVIF Conversion
AVIF encoding isn't available in this tool yet — not because it's impossible in principle, but because a real AVIF encoder is a large (multi-megabyte) piece of software, and we'd rather be upfront about that than silently hand you a mislabeled file. Here's the honest state of things, and what actually works today.
Why JPEG → AVIF Isn't Available Yet
AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec, and a genuine AV1 encoder — even a browser/JavaScript one — is a large piece of compiled software (several megabytes), not a small utility function. Loading that just for an occasional AVIF conversion would work against everything else this site optimizes for: fast pages and a lightweight tool. So rather than either skip the honesty or bloat every page with a multi-megabyte encoder most visitors would never use, this conversion currently isn't offered.
This is different from a format like HEIC, which no browser can encode *at all* — AVIF encoding is technically possible client-side, just not yet built into this particular tool. If that changes, this page will be the first to know.
In the meantime, WebP gets you most of the same benefit: a modern format with meaningfully smaller files than JPEG, broad browser support, and a converter that works right now, fully client-side, with nothing to download but the image itself.
What to Use Instead Right Now
- Want a genuinely smaller file than JPEG today? Our JPEG to WebP converter works entirely in your browser and produces real, valid WebP files.
- Specifically need AVIF for a project or CMS requirement? Right now that requires dedicated image-optimization software (like Squoosh, ImageMagick, or a build-time tool such as sharp) rather than a lightweight browser tool.
- Already have an AVIF file and need it in something more widely supported? That direction works — our AVIF to JPEG converter and AVIF to PNG converter both run fully client-side.
Every other tool on this site still runs entirely in your browser — nothing about this limitation affects the rest of the site's privacy approach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not yet. A real AVIF encoder is a large piece of software, and adding it would mean loading several extra megabytes for a conversion most visitors wouldn't use — so it's not currently built into this tool, and we'd rather say that plainly than fake it.
No — HEIC encoding is impossible in any browser, full stop, because browsers don't expose an HEVC encoder at all. AVIF encoding is technically achievable client-side; it's just not implemented in this tool yet due to the size of a real encoder.
WebP. Our JPEG to WebP converter runs entirely in your browser and produces a genuinely smaller, modern file — not identical savings to AVIF, but a real, working conversion today rather than a promise.
Dedicated tools like Squoosh (a Google web app built specifically around heavier codecs) or command-line tools like ImageMagick and sharp can encode AVIF. This site prioritizes staying lightweight, so it doesn't bundle that kind of encoder for a single format.
Yes — decoding AVIF works fine in the browser, so our AVIF to JPEG and AVIF to PNG converters both run entirely client-side with no limitations.
