Why PNG → AVIF Isn't Available Yet
AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec. A genuine AV1 encoder — even a JavaScript/WebAssembly one — is several megabytes of compiled code, not a small utility function. Bundling that into every page just so a fraction of visitors can convert to AVIF would slow down the site for everyone else, so this conversion currently isn't offered rather than being silently faked.
This is a "not yet" rather than a hard wall — AVIF encoding is technically achievable client-side (unlike, say, HEIC, which no browser can encode at all). It's simply not implemented in this particular tool yet.
