What is Hue Shifting?
Hue shifting rotates all colors in an image around the color wheel while maintaining their saturation and brightness. This transformation creates striking color changes: blue skies can become purple or green, red flowers transform to yellow or blue, and entire color schemes shift to create completely new moods and aesthetics.
Our hue shifter uses professional color space conversion (RGB to HSL and back) to ensure smooth, natural-looking color transitions. With precise control from -180° to +180°, you can explore endless creative possibilities while maintaining image quality and detail.
How to Use the Hue Shifter
- Upload Images: Click or drag and drop your photos. Supports JPG, PNG, WebP, and other common formats.
- Adjust Hue: Use the slider to rotate colors. Positive values shift forward on the color wheel, negative values shift backward.
- Preview Results: See side-by-side comparison to find your perfect color transformation.
- Download: Choose output format and quality settings, then save your color-shifted images.

Understanding Hue Rotation
The color wheel is divided into 360 degrees, with each hue occupying a specific position. Red is at 0°, yellow at 60°, green at 120°, cyan at 180°, blue at 240°, and magenta at 300°. When you shift hue by +60°, every color moves forward by that amount: red becomes yellow, blue becomes magenta, green becomes cyan.
A shift of ±180° creates complementary colors - the exact opposite on the color wheel. Blue becomes orange, red becomes cyan, and yellow becomes purple. Smaller shifts (30-90°) create harmonious but noticeably different color schemes, while larger shifts (120-150°) produce dramatic transformations.
Popular Hue Shift Values
- +30° to +60°: Subtle shifts that warm or cool images while maintaining recognizable colors.
- +90° or -90°: Quarter-turn rotation creating distinctly different but natural-looking palettes.
- ±120°: Dramatic transformation perfect for surreal or artistic effects.
- ±180°: Complete inversion to complementary colors for maximum contrast.
Tips for Best Results
- Start with Colorful Images: Photos with strong, saturated colors show the most dramatic transformations.
- Avoid Skin Tones: Portraits with hue shifts can look unnatural. Use sparingly or focus on backgrounds.
- Experiment Freely: Try unexpected values - sometimes the most interesting results come from random exploration.
- Consider Context: Match hue shifts to mood - cool shifts for calm, warm shifts for energy.
- Combine with Other Adjustments: Use with saturation and contrast for professional color grading.
Privacy & Security
Your privacy is our priority. Unlike other online photo editors, our hue shifter processes everything directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your images never get uploaded to any server, ensuring complete confidentiality for personal photos, client work, or creative projects. No registration, no tracking, no data collection.
Technical Details
Our hue shifter converts RGB pixels to HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) color space, rotates the hue component by the specified degrees, then converts back to RGB. This method preserves saturation and brightness while smoothly transitioning colors around the color wheel.
We recommend PNG format for hue-shifted images as it preserves color accuracy without compression artifacts. JPEG is suitable for photographs when file size matters. WebP offers excellent quality with smaller file sizes for modern browsers.
